DID YOU KNOW?

The history of the legendary Yale Hotel dates back to the mid 1880’s, where it originally served as a Canadian Pacific Railway bunkhouse during Vancouver’s early development. In 1886, a raging fire destroyed many of the structures in Vancouver’s central area, leaving The Yale Hotel untouched by its blazing flames. Following this devastation, The Yale Hotel became a gathering place for members of the community. Refurbished in 1889, The Yale Hotel was renamed The Colonial, which became known for its wild nightlife activity. In 1911, The Yale Hotel reverted back to its original name and in the early 1980’s became the focal point for live blues in Western Canada showcasing legends such as B.B. King, John Lee Hooker and Buddy Guy.

David Gogo plays Saturday, February 13th at 9:00pm.

Relax - There's A New Gogo Single At Canadian Radio

Award winning guitarist and singer David Gogo's new album, Different Views has already been receiving much critical acclaim.  This time Gogo teamed up with Juno-nominated producer Russell Broom (Jann Arden, Sam Roberts, The Dudes, Wil) and had several of Canada's best musicians provide guest appearances.

Recorded on Vancouver Island, the album was inspired by breathtaking British Columbia views, Gogo's vinyl collection, vintage guitars and pop culture memorabilia. This combination has added originality and flavour without losing focus of what he's all about.

Relax is no exception. Co-written with Shaun Verrault (Wide Mouth Mason) this track is a catchy R&B ballad filled with sweet guitar riffs and melodic vocals, all glued together by a laid-back groove.

David Gogo Heads Back To Europe

Cordova Bay's David Gogo has generated tons of excitment in Canada this month with the release of his CD - Different Views - and electrifying festival dates in British Columbia, Alberta, Ontario and Quebec. He is now about to head back to Europe for another 10 days of performances and promotional events.

Last weekend's performance at the Edmonton Labatts Blues Festival tingled with excitement as Gogo shocked the crowd (almost literally - there was a thunderstorm in the area) with his guitar wizardry, his wit and enthusiasm. Playing a handful of songs from his new CD, he peppered the set with a collection of his past catalog along with a few spicy and meaty covers by blues masters -- including Buddy Guy - getting a standing ovation and encore request (oddity at festivals) from the appreciative audience.

If you get a chance to catch Gogo live, do it, you'll love it. Dates continue to be added to his schedule so check back to www.cordovabay.com often!

David Gogo Releases New CD

Released on Cordova Bay Records July 14th!

It's blues, it's rock, it's a brilliant blend of soul and sensuality, searing guitar, sultry lyrics and accessible melodies.

On July 14th, Cordova Bay Records, proudly released the 10th CD from the incomparable David Gogo, titled Different Views. (Available at all leading retail stores in Canada plus iTunes and the rest of the network oriented stores in Canada and abroad.)

Without straying too far from his signature sound, Gogo has compiled a 12-track disc of songs that blends genres, held together by a thread of commonality - the blues. It glides effortlessly from the classic blues shuffle (Over and Over) to a top 5 charted single from the summer of 1979 (Gold) to the memorable boogie beat (Where The Devil Won?t Go).

Recorded at his home in Nanaimo, overlooking the family's 160-acre Christmas tree farm and forest, Different Views was destined to live up to its name.  With the drums set up in the front foyer, the guitar amps in the laundry room and the vocals recorded in David's music room, the Gogo house was transformed into a studio with a view, not to mention a kitchen that was open and serving for the duration.   At times, Gogo wasn't sure if he was a musician or a caterer!

With the pressure of working against a studio clock taken out of the equation, and access to Gogo's vast collection of vinyl albums, vintage guitars and pop culture memorabilia, fewer restrictions meant the focus could rest squarely on the creative process.  As if the pristine wilderness was not enough to draw from, they then crossed the pond to the British Columbia mainland where the keyboards of Rick Hopkins were recorded at his home overlooking Lion's Bay.

Produced by Russell Broom. (Jann Arden, Sam Roberts, The Dudes, Wil) the CD features guests Shaun Verrault (Wide Mouth Mason), roots diva Carolyn Mark and jazz great Phil Dwyer.  The end result is an eclectic but cohesive mix of songs.  From the opening guitar driven rock 'n roll sound of Too Late to Stop Now to the exquisite R&B ballad Relax, Different Views showcases David's versatility and talent which is matched only by his engaging and entertaining live show.

The award winning Gogo continues to tour extensively and over the years has opened for the likes of B.B. King, ZZ Top, George Thorogood, Johnny Winter, Jimmie Vaughan, Albert Collins, Little Feat, Buddy Guy and The Tragically Hip, amongst others.  From Canada to Europe the remainder of the year is filled with tour dates in support of the new release.

Different Views brings together the musical styles of a man from a new generation of blues  - a man destined to preserve the integrity of the sound while drawing in new legions of fans.   That man is David Gogo.

David Gogo - Different Views

For his 10th album, Different Views, blues rocker David Gogo definitely had some unique sights to inspire him during the recording process.  Instead of the usual confines of your typical recording studio, the bulk of the album was recorded at his home - overlooking the 160-acre Christmas tree farm and forest that make up the Gogo family compound.  The keyboard tracks were recorded at Rick Hopkins' (Colin James, Barney Bentall) home overlooking breath-taking Lions Bay, British Columbia.

The album is produced by Russell Broom (Jann Arden, Sam Roberts, The Dudes, Wil) with guests Shaun Verrault (Wide Mouth Mason), roots diva Carolyn Mark, and jazz great Phil Dwyer popping in at various times.  With the drums set up in the foyer and guitar amps in the laundry room, the Gogo house was filled with music and good food.  At times, Gogo wasn't sure if he was a musician or a caterer!  The fact that the clock wasn't ticking, along with Gogo's vast collection of vinyl albums, vintage guitars and pop culture memorabilia at their fingertips encouraged a stimulating creative environment.  This combination has added variety and spice unlike previous Gogo efforts without losing focus of what he's all about.

Gogo tours extensively and has toured with and occasionally performed on stage with a multitude of rock and blues legends (B.B. King, ZZ Top, George Thorogood, Johnny Winter, Bonnie Raitt, Jimmie Vaughan, Buddy Guy, Little Feat, Albert Collins, The Tragically Hip, among others).  He will continue to tour and perform at blues festivals internationally through the summer and fall in support of Different Views.

Although still relatively young in blues years, Gogo has an impressive list of accomplishments.  So far David Gogo has three Juno nominations, was named Musician of the Year at the Western Canadian Music Awards, was twice named Guitarist of the Year at the Maple Blues Awards, and has been bestowed with the CBC Saturday Night Blues' Great Canadian Blues Award for a lifetime contribution to the blues in Canada.  David Gogo's continuing successes have him busier than ever and happy to find acceptance as a world class blues man.

Different Views will be released in Canada through Cordova Bay Records on July 14, 2009.
