David Gogo
Vibe (Cordova Bay Records)
*** 1/2 (3 1/2 Stars) |
For guitarists, particularly
those bitten by the blues, it often takes a lifetime to learn less
is more. And some never realize taste trumps flash and soul beats speed,
every time. Perhaps it was simple maturity, or the experience of playing
in support of the economical Jimmie Vaughan, but whatever the reason,
Vancouver's David Gogo has taken purpose (over pyrotechnics) to heart
on his latest release, Vibe. The guitarist's 2002 effort, Skeleton
Key, was equally concise in execution but not nearly as balanced. Gogo
has emerged as a musician in the mold of John Haitt: a roots belter
comfortable cranking out Memphis Soul (I'd Do Anything), Crescent City
swamp shuffles (Silk and Stone), sturdy country (Hey Juanita) and grinding
Stones-like rock 'n' roll (Love In The City) with a newfound sense
of authority. But at times Vibe is a touch too slick. When Gogo figures
out how to write songs every bit as tough and commanding as his voice,
he'll be truly dangerous.
